Example: (exact handicap) Player A has a handicap between 13-20. The buffer zone for this category is 0 - +3. If player A returns a card and her net score is within the buffer zone there is no change to her handicap. (A NET score is in a buffer zone when the difference between the net score and the EWGA Scratch Score is within the band for that handicap category.) If Player A returns a card below the EWGA Scratch Score, her exact handicap will be reduced by the factor for her handicap category for each stroke below the Scratch Score. In this case 0.3 per stroke. If Player A returned her card with a net score in a qualifying competition that is above her buffer zone, her exact handicap will be increased by 0.1. Players who fail to return cards in qualifying competitions will have their exact handicaps increased by 0.1. Playing Handicap Alterations to playing handicap will be made immediately. How do I get my first handicap? To gain a handicap 3 cards must be put in within 1 year, marked by a responsible person other than the player. They should be CLEARLY NAMED, DATED AND SIGNED BY BOTH PLAYER AND MARKER AND CLEARLY MARKED “FOR HANDICAP PURPOSES”. It is recommended by the EWGA that a new player should have one card playing to 36 or under when submitting the 3 cards. Active/Inactive Handicaps The English Women’s Golf Association and English Golf Union has launched an Active/Inactive handicap system which identifies the competitive nature of individual golfers. The system is approved and supported by CONGU. It identifies, by the use of an indicator, whether an individual has competed in qualifying competitions during the year and as a result returned information on their playing ability. The system requires all members with CONGU handicaps to have returned at least three qualifying scores each year to ensure they have an active handicap. Those members not meeting the minimum number of scores in a year are identified with an i (inactive) which will appear on their CONGU certificate and handicap lists published by CONGU approved handicapping software in the following year. Qualifying scores of less than three will not be carried forward to the next year. The i will be removed from the player’s handicap as soon as three qualifying scores have been returned.
